Some facts and reviews of the prescription IBS treatment VIBERZI

All natural IBS treatment vs prescription VIBERZI

As I continue to enjoy total relief of my IBS symptoms thanks to our all natural IBS Formula, I often question why so many folks resort to expensive, often dangerous prescription IBS treatments. The answer seems to be unscrupulous drug manufacturers mass marketing to a vulnerable audience - those of you who have suffered from irritable bowel syndrome for years and are desperate for relief.  These companies spend billions of dollars rushing new prescription IBS treatments to market with little or no long-term testing.  Catchy commercials touting total cures flood the media, but let the buyer beware!  For instance, you have probably seen the VIBERZI ad featuring a silly red-haired, Kathy Griffin looking woman in a colon costume shadowing a VIBERZI user who happily finds relief from her debilitating IBS symptoms. The dangers of VIBERZI are down-played; even the mention of DEATH is quickly glossed over!  Unfortunately, the dangers are very real and may be quite severe, as evidenced by the flood of attorney commercials announcing class action lawsuits against VIBERZI’s manufacturer, Allergan.

Yes, the toll VIBERZI may take on your pocketbook is hefty (over $1,100 for 60 tablets if your insurance won’t cover it), but its toll on your health - and life - may be much, much worse. The FDA warned in March 2017 that VIBERZI (generic: eluxadoline) causes pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) in some patients who have had their gallbladders removed, and that this condition may cause hospitalization or DEATH

Since VIBERZI was FDA approved for the treatment of IBS with diarrhea in May 2015, it has been linked to at least two deaths, 120 reports of serious pancreatitis, and 76 hospitalizations.  Many of the cases occurred after just 1 or 2 uses; one of the deaths resulted from symptoms that started within an hour of taking VIBERZI!

Also, the FDA warns that VIBERZI is a controlled substance listed as Schedule 4 (IV) Drug by the Controlled Substances Act. It has the potential for abuse, physical dependence, or psychological dependence – things IBS sufferers definitely don’t need to add to their list of miseries!

VIBERZI works by activating opioid receptors in the gut, which decreases bowel contractions, reducing incidents of diarrhea and sometimes alleviating abdominal pain. It slows the movement of food during digestion and makes the nerves in the intestines less sensitive to stimulation.

VIBERZI ‘s most severe side effect is pancreatitis, a disease in which the pancreas becomes inflamed.  Pancreatic damage happens when digestive enzymes are activated before they are released into the small intestine and begin attacking the pancreas.

The symptoms of pancreatitis include:

  • Upper abdominal pain that radiates into the back
  • Swollen and tender abdomen
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Fever
  • Increased heart rate

Other side effects of VIBERZI include:

  • Constipation
  • Nausea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Upper respiratory tract infection
  • Vomiting
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Bloating
  • Bronchitis
  • Dizziness
  • Gas
  • Rash
  • Fatigue

People with the following conditions should not take VIBERZI:

  • Severe constipation or a blockage in the intestines
  • A history of gallbladder obstruction
  • Digestive problems caused by a muscle valve called the “sphincter of Oddi”
  • Severe liver disease
  • A pancreas disorder
  • Habitual drinking of more than three alcoholic beverages per day

Even though VIBERZI  has proven effective for some users, many patient comments I found on say otherwise:

"The worst drug I have ever experienced. First day felt like I had a band crushing my head, my vision blurred and my liver ached, but I tried to push on. Day two had a full blown migraine, my stomach bloated to painful to touch, I began vomiting and my back felt like a mule kicked me in the liver. The pain was similar to kidney stone. Rectal bleeding was intense and did not stop my diarrhea.”

"Was constipated most of the 2 weeks I was on it. One night all of the sudden I had horrible cramping under my rib cage and a pain that went all the way up my spine. The pain was so horrendous I was crawling on the floor, crying in pain, screaming in a pillow as to not wake my children. I would scream at times and nothing would come out. I had tears and mucous coming down my face. I literally thought I was in hell. I have NEVER experienced pain like this in my life. I have birthed 2 children and lived with Ulcerative Colitis/IBD for 15 years. I know what pain is. I wound up going to the ER and reporting this to my GI doctor. So much for this "miracle pill". I was so hoping this was going to work."

"I've been having success for years controlling my symptoms with probiotics and a sugar-free, spice-free diet, but thought maybe with Viberzi I could eventually get back to eating anything I want again. You know, be "normal"? Wrong! After just a few days of taking it, I had pain like I have never felt before in my life - shooting up my back and stomach, to the point that I was vomiting nonstop and shooting pangs of diarrhea(!!) Isn't that what this drug is supposed to cure? It was like the worst case of food poisoning, but with indescribable pain. I remember saying "I'll take IBS-d over this any day!" I am back on my probiotics and my sugar free diet and finally recovered again."

"Very disappointed.  For some reason the medicine seemed to aggravate my IBS and trigger a week of symptoms.  The worst of which was bloating, and diarrhea.”

“After a year on it I was in the ER 3 times with pain in upper GI tract. I guess my liver didn't like it and I got drug induced hepatitis.”

"Worked for maybe a week then stopped working. Stopped for a couple weeks and tried again, does nothing at all, back to Imodium that has been working some for 30 years."

“I think Viberzi worked for my IBS but it made me nauseous and didn't feel well. After the first two weeks, it put me in the bed because I was so fatigued. Now, I have a prescription that cost over $1,000 that I can't use.”

“Got a 90 day supply for $30 on a special promotion but after that if insurance does not cover I don't know if I can afford to stay on it. Cost per month is around $1000 - $1200."
